Science at the Extreme: Scientists on the Cutting Edge of Discovery
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (21 August, 2000)
Authors: Peter Lane Taylor and Thomas E. Lovejoy
Average review score:

Outstanding!
More than just a "coffee table" book, this is a fascinating journey into the world of "extreme science". The photography is outstanding and the commentary articulate, educational and approachable. A great "maiden voyage" from Peter Lane Taylor. I can't wait to see what he comes up with next!

Outstanding book by a new author
Taylor has done a superb job with his first book. Each chapter is captivating and full of new information. Instead of glossing over the sometimes difficult technical material which is discussed in this book, Taylor writes in a way that shares the depth and rigor of the research that is the subject of 'Science at the Extreme'. Both the writing and the photography in this book are engaging and instructional; and in each chapter, the reader's appetite for 'extreme science' grows stronger.

It is encouraging to see a book that does such an exceptional job of bringing together the popular culture ingredients common in National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, with the rigorous components of scientific research that exist at the National Science Foundation and in academia-at-large. 'Science at the Extreme' is just the kind of work that is needed to reinvigorate student interest in science in America, although it certainly does not appear to be the objective of the book. I have no doubt that high-schools and colleges will have to start offering 'Science at the Extreme' classes after students get a hold of this book.

I'm already looking forward to Taylor's next offering, although he has a tough act to follow since the bar has been set so high with 'Science at the Extreme'.

The only thing missing in 'Science at the Extreme' is an order form for buying large-size prints of Taylor's inspiring photographs...

The diving aspect
I was very much impressed with the chapter on cave diving and the excellent leadership of the WKPP. These guys and gals are a very select few diving to depths of 300ft with total dive time of 15 plus hours. The research of florida caves is extensive and the surface has only been scraped. The dedication and team development of the WKPP is beyond anything on the planet.

Surviving the Hungry Years: Story of a West End Champion

engrossing life story of an unassuming champion
Jimmy Lane chronicles his life from his childhood to present. Born and raised in West Virginia, he was one of eight children in a very poor family. He details the trials and tribulations that he overcame to win the Golden Gloves title in 1953 and 1954. Fascinating and heartwarming tales from his amateur and professional boxing careers.

Fabulous
Was extremely interesting, could not set this book down until it was read cover to cover. Thought the story was really great and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Surviving the Hungry Years
Very Interesting Story of Triumph! Jimmy Lane writes with honesty and holds "no punches" I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an uplifting story!

Through the Rosary With Fra Angelico
Published in Paperback by Alba House (October, 1989)
Authors: Domenico Marcucci, Edmund C. Lane, and Fra Angelico
Average review score:

One nice alternative Rosary
Through The Rosary With Fra Angelico is a beautiful pamphlet which provides one alternative for reciting the rosary. It begins with a short history of the Rosary and instructions on how to say the Rosary. For each mystery it includes art by Fra Angelica; a short description of the mystery; a Biblical passage related to the mystery; prayer intentions; Then for each Hail Mary after "fruit of your womb Jesus" it provides a phrase "who ; for final prayers it provides the Salve Regina and the Litany of the Blessed Virgin.

Every Catholic should know the "plain vanilla" Rosary but everyone must find the form of the Rosary (if any) which is most appropriate to their prayer life. This could be an excellent choice.

23 year old recommends this book
This book is an awesome way to help you meditate on the mysteries while praying the Rosary. I have bought it for several of my friends. The paintings are also beautiful. Try it out. It is only a couple bucks! :O)

Through the Rosary with Fra Angelico
I've used this book for years, and I find it to be a much more meaningful way to say the Rosary than the usual method. It is a good way to do a meditation on each of the mysteries. I bought copies for all the kids at the diocesan summer camp that I run, so obviously, I really do recommend it! Fr. Bob Haux

Vegetarian Express Lane Cookbook : Hassle-Free Vegatarian Meals for Really Busy Cooks
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (April, 1999)
Author: Sarah Fritschner
Average review score:

I use this book ALL the time!
I had been a vegetarian for a couple of years before I found this cookbook and boy, did it change the way I cook! I had been mostly relying on a couple of basic beans and rice type dishes and adapting my meat-based recipes. This book opened up a whole new world of possibilities. I use the recipes in it at least 5 days a week. There are plenty of them from different categories (grains, potatoes, pasta, etc.) so my family doesn't get bored (and I have 2 little children under 6). We all love the food prepared using these recipes. It's also given me some inspiration for coming up with dishes of my own. One of my favorite things about this book is the fact that Ms. Frischner makes suggestions about what to serve with each dish and often variations on the recipe or what to do with leftovers. This is a must have for EVERY kitchen whether you're vegetarian or not!

Learn how to cook!
My mother gave me this book a year ago, when I left for my second year of college, and I didn't use it once. At the beginning of this summer, I promised myself that I would learn how to cook, since I will be cooking for myself at school this year. For the last month and a half, my grandma and I have teamed up every day to make a different, but always very tasty meal from this book. It's totally fun! At the beginning of the weak I check out the recipes I want to try, buy the ingredients, and I'm ready to cook after a day at work. One of the greatest things about these recipes is that the instructions are very thorough, which makes it hard to screw up. I made my first cake from scratch, and it turned out perfectly. Needless to say, I am very happy and am proud to say that I finally have some of the basic, but very necessary, skills of cooking down pat.

I'm not even vegetarian and I love it.
Let me put it this way. I had to figure out what to eat for the next week and we were already over budget on food, so I couldn't spend much. I flipped through this book and easily found four recipes that were mostly made up of staples I already had. And most of her recipes are so quick to make there is no excuse not to cook. Even the longer recipes she has alternatives to make them shorter. Chapters are set up by food headings such as Rice; Beans; Vegetables; and Pizzas. She also has ways of sneaking in new vegetables such as kohlrabi and bok choy and turnips without anybody being the wiser (except the cook). An amazing cookbook.

Veterinary Nursing
Published in Paperback by Butterworth-Heinemann (February, 1997)
Authors: D. R. Lane and B. Cooper
Average review score:

Nursing
This is an amazing text book and has been quite useful to me. It is packed full of day-to-day useful information on almost everything you need to know about veterinary nursing.

A Great Guide
I was introduced to this book while volunteering at an animal clinic that had no regular veterinarian. The veterinarian would only cover emergencies and sterilizations, not any other problems. By using this easy to use volume with clear concise information, the other volunteers and I were able to help countless animals with a huge variety of illnesses. From help with signs of disease to learning how to properly bandage an ear, it was referenced time and time again. I immediately realized I needed my own copy. Although a bit pricey, it'll earn its keep rapidly.

Veterinary Nursing
This is really a good book on the subject --- "Veterinary Nursing" Its content is one of the best if not the best. This book's presentation is the best of this kind. Really easy to read. I highly recommend to all the nursing professionals.

The Walk A Moment In Time When Two Lives Intersect
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (13 March, 2001)
Author: Michael Card
Average review score:

The Walk: Full of Life and Seed-Thoughts
I found this book in a discount store and could not pass it up because of my interest in discipleship. I could not put this little book down! I has several ah-ha moments as I read through Card's thoughts. Here are a few that have stuck with me: 1)God embodies truth in people. God sent truth into the world through Jesus, who is the truth. In the same way, a discipler is one who embodies aspects of truth. This thought is not emphasized in the book, but it has stuck with me and made me think of how to disciple someone. 2)Sonship is established in the wilderness. Through trial we find how much we need Jesus. We notice he is close to us. Card writes profoundly as one who has suffered and learned from it. He ties in discipleship by talking about his mentor's role during the tough times of his life.
In the end, Card writes with a clear knowledge of Scripture. Several times while reading the book, I wanted to put it down and become more familiar with my Bible, not because I doubted the truth of his comments but because the Word is eternally interesting, satisfying, and freeing. Card's love for truth and the person of Christ is contagious. Don't miss out on this book!

The Walk - a life.
"I want to show you how a Christian man dies." This is what Dr. Bill Lane told Michael Card when Bill discovered he had a terminal illness. If you are led to believe this is a book about death, you are mistaken. It is a book about life, Bill Lane's life and Michael Card's life. If you were as fortunate as Michael was, and knew Bill, you will hear his voice and feel his presence on every page. If you enjoy Michael's music and wonder where his Christian maturity and spiritual insight comes from, in meeting Bill Lane you will have discovered the answer. If you have never heard of either of them, after reading the book you will discover what a "walk" with Jesus Christ can mean to you in life and in what the world calls "death".

The Walk
Reading the truth of how God does work in each of our lives is there in that book...is like being six years old and playing dress up and standing in shoes 10x's your size! It's simply your future...but you're not there yet! You will have to grow into it. But they are the right shoes. This is the response of a friend I lent the book to. I agree wholeheartedly it just that she put it better than I ever could. Michael Card's work always leaves me with a closer taste of the Lord.

Whatever Happened to the Gospel of Grace: Recovering the Doctrines That Shook the World
Published in Hardcover by Crossway Books (February, 2001)
Authors: James Montgomery Boice, Eric J. Alexander, and Lane T. Dennis
Average review score:

Neo Reformation
This book by Dr. Boice (Ph.D., Basel, Switzerland) was a rich, fresh read for those suffocated by pluralism and relativism. When looking at the decay at the world, one is excited to read that the same decay was present before the Reformation. Dr. Boice expouses the same hope for today.

Dr. Boice expounds the five reformational creeds (Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Sola Scriptura, Solus Christus, and Soli Deo GLoria), the impact that they had on their world, and the possible impact that they can have on our world. Boice notes the dangers that plague our churches and our homes, relativism and pragmatism, and how each of these creeds, immersed in Scripture, provide the elixir for our dying land. Also with these Scripture Creeds, he shows the impact that Reformation minded saints can transform society.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is not as deep as many of these type of works (as scholarly as he is, Boice is a pastor and communicates as one), making it a readable work that can be read in a busy schedule.

A Good Book on the Doctrines of Grace
Anyone wanting a good introduction to the doctrines of grace from a Reformed and Calvinistic perspective must look here. It is reliable and easy to read. It is geared towards the laity so anyone can pick it up and read it. The section on the 5 solas of the Reformation is very well-written.

Diagnoses the Disease Plaguing the Church Today
The late James Boice was a great asset to the Kingdom of God. His books communicated great truths in an understandable manner. His last book, released almost a year after his death is no exception. With grace and gentleness, yet with a passion for the truth of Scripture, he examines evangelicalism today. His conclusion is that we have lost much of the Gospel in our churches. The lives of many Christians differ very little from the world around us! He looks back to the truths of Scripture that transformed the church during the Reformation, and says that we must return to them if we hope and truly long for revival today. We need to recover the great Reformation and Biblical doctrines of Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone and Glory to God Alone.

Here's a sample:

"No people ever rise higher than their idea of God. Conversely, the loss of the sense of God's high and awesome character always leads to the loss of a people's highest ideals, moral values, and even what we commonly call humanity, not to mention the loss of understanding and appreciation for the most essential Bible doctrines...We deplore the breakdown of moral standards in the church, even among its most visible leaders. But what do we think should happen when we have focused on ourselves and our own, often trivial needs rather than on God, ignoring his holiness and excusing our most blatant sins? To listen to many contemporary sermons one would think man's chief end is to glorify himself and cruise the malls." (pp. 151-152).

Whatever Happened to the Gospel of Grace? is a much-needed reminder of what we should again believe, and why it matters.

The Art of Maurice Sendak
Published in Hardcover by Abradale Press (September, 1998)
Author: Selma G. Lanes
Average review score:

An illustrator, artist, writer, making the history.
For many north american and japanese families, everyone must remember the legendary children book of their young age, "Where the wild things are" by Maurice Sendak. Well, Sendak didn't just draw and write his own children books. He did many other things before actually getting to the success he is at now.
The book goes in detail about Sendak's personal life growing up in Brooklyn, New York, from his very early stage of life as a Polish American child to his approach as an artist at teenage age. The author talks about his influence from his parents and siblings, as well their struggle to survive the recessive economy in America. The author treats Sendak as an artist, who explores mostly around the writings and illustrations of children. The book shows many rare prints and drawings of Sendak. How Sendak plays with art materials and his creativity into both pictorial children books and editorial illustrations. Near the end of the book it also talks about his plans and drawings for theatre art, especially the opera for "Where the Wild Things Are". Something not everyone knew about!
I would say this is a book for any illustration fan or artist to own. But don't get it for your kid, it is no children book, it is an artbook mostly aim for adults and collectors.

The Best picture book ever!!
This book is the best book ever my children love it! The pictures are awesome nothing can compare to Maurice Sendak's pictures.

Offering everything anyone needs to know
The Babysitting Bible is a thoroughly "user friendly" instructional guide designed for teenagers and young adults seeking to become effective, competent, and skilled babysitters for children of any age or background. Comprehensive and authoritative, The Baby Sitting Bible is a single volume reference offering everything anyone needs to know in order to take proper and protective care of their young charges -- and to handle themselves in a professional, responsible manner so as to provide the parents of those charges with justifiable confidence in the babysitter's abilities. If you are planning to engage in babysitting, then carefully read all 156 pages of Jordan Lane's The Baby Sitting Bible.

This is a great book for parents and sitters
I am a mother of infant twin girls and was looking for a book about babysitting. I came upon The Babysitting Bible and gave it a try. It is great. It is written clearly, has great advice and really made me comfortable with the choices I have made in finding a babysitter. When my daughters get old enough to be babysitters I will definitely give them this book!!

Advanced FileMaker Pro 6 Web Development
Published in Paperback by Wordware Publishing (01 March, 2003)
Authors: Bob Bowers, Steve Lane, Moyer, and Bowers
Average review score:

From a standing start, this will get you publishing with FMP
Very well done. An excellent introduction to the web for experienced Filemaker users. The nicest thing is that it has parallel sections for CDML and its alternatives, like PHP. Great if you want to know which way to go. Does a good job of pointing out that even using CDML, you basically have to abandon everything about Filemaker except the data structures. Which makes you wonder why you'd use it at all, rather than, say, PHP and mySQL. Presumably, in v7, FMP will answer that question, or lose all their web programmers. (4th Dimension bigots like myself will tell you 4D is the better way to get on the web, but let's not start THAT fight.) The book is smaller - height and width, not page count - than a typical computer book, but the material is excellent. (I save five stars for the best of the best.)

If you want to understand FM Web Publishing - buy this book
All other training and references merely scratch the surface. This book goes into detail about what you can and can't do - and more importantly - why? Not for the novice - but interemediate and advanced users will find much in this book that they can use.

Well Worth It For Extending FileMaker
This is the second book I've read from these guys. If your a FileMaker developer wanting to get in touch with more web-centric technologies, this book not only explains how, but give you the background so you can cross-reference other sources. Good explanation of XML and XSLT with examples and the section on PHP should open up a whole new world if you're willing to live in a text editor. Good-bye CDML. Plenty of good examples, plain English, and their understanding of technology goes well beyond FileMaker.
